Killimer National School
This is on private property so please do not trespass.
As you drive west along the road you will come across the next few stopping points quite close together.

From the Lewis Topographical Dictionary of Ireland in 1837 we learn that the original Killimer National School was held in Killimer chapel and was attended by about 100 children. Following this the school was built in the townland of Donogrogue and was opened in 1895.
The site was allocated by Mr Robert Carey Reeves of Besborough House and the first teacher was Thomas Neenan, Poulnadáree, native of Mullagh. Mrs Kitty Sheehan was appointed as the school’s final teacher. Kitty Sheehan retired in 1973 and the school then closed due to small numbers.

Killimer School hosted many events in its earlier years and a number of night classes were conducted there. We have records dated back to 1904 of Mechanical Drawing classes of a very high standard below is a drawing by Mick Madigan, Derrylough.

Dances, concerts and drama were all part and parcel of that school and it served as a community centre of sorts. The locality lost a very valuable amenity in 1979 due to the burning of Killimer School.
