St Imy’s Well & Shrine

Please note that the well is in private property so please don’t try to find the well you can find lovely drone footage of it below.

We are now about 100 yards to the east of Burrane graveyard where we can find St Imy’s Shrine and in O’Driscoll’s farm, St Imy’s Well. In the Irish Calendars of the Saints a female saint named Iomar is commemorated on the 13th of August, that’s when our parish commemorates St Imy and this can be seen in the different ways places are named in our parish – Cill Ímí – The church of Imy compared to Cill Iomar – The irish name for our football team.

The shrine in honour of St Imy was erected by the Legion of Mary members in July 1946 and is supposed to be adjacent to her burial place. Tradition tells us that after her death her body came floating on a tombstone into Burrane town land but the natives would not take her in, on returning a second time they took the body in and buried her. It is said that the interring of the body of St Imy was instrumental in converting many people in Burrane town land to the faith. The Shrine has been very well maintained down the years by the O’Driscoll family.

On the O’ Driscoll land is Leach Iomaigh and also a holy well called Tobar Iomaigh. It is referred to as Tobereemy in maps at the turn of the century.
